CLEAN ENERGY AND ADAPTATION: SAVE80 CLEAN COOK STOVE
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide, around 2.3 billion people still cook using solid fuels (such as wood, crop waste, charcoal, coal and dung) and kerosene in open fires and inefficient stoves. Most of these people are poor and live in low- and middle-income countries. There is a large discrepancy in access to cleaner cooking alternatives between urban and rural areas: in 2021, only 14% of people in urban areas relied on polluting fuels and technologies, compared with 49% of the global rural population.
About 75 % of the families in Nigeria still use three stone fires and firewood for daily cooking. In northern Nigeria the percentage is even up to 99% of the families. One family with 7 persons needs about 4 tons of firewood per year. This enormous need of firewood has led to almost complete deforestation and increasing deforestation especially in the poor northern parts of the country. Firewood is thus scarce in northern Nigeria. Wood must be transported from southern Nigeria by truck and trains and is so expensive that energy costs about 10 times more than food (in Europe they are about equal in cost). Exposure is particularly high among women and children, who spend the most time near the domestic hearth. Reliance on polluting fuels and technologies also require significant time for cooking on an inefficient device, and gathering and preparing fuel.
CLHEI in partnership with Atmosfair Climate and Sustainability Limited is unveiling an innovation that helps to mitigate household cooking crisis in Nigeria through the SAVE 80 CLEAN COOKING STOVE. The Save80 Clean Cook Stove proposes to save 31,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and is an efficient Innovation that saves 80% of energy, reducing indoor air pollution and deforestation and enables fewer expenses for household energy.
Through this efforts, the objectives are to:
a.) Increased access to clean cooking energy solutions to address household cooking crisis in Benue State.
b.) Increased access to affordable cooking solutions for low-income families.
c.) Contribute to climate mitigation and disaster risk reduction.
